How much could I save over time?

December 16, 2014 by The Valente Group

Tips to Save Money over a Certain Period

Let’s face it; inflation is at its highest with the cost of living rising every day. Each one of us wants to live a comfortable lifestyle and save a good amount of money at the same time. Unfortunately, this is easier said than done, because we often tend to slip up when it comes to spending habits, which lead to dwindling savings and maybe debt.

Budgeting is not an option anymore but a necessity:

  • The retail therapy might be advised by many to take the edge off from a tiring week at work, but if you make it a habit, it is sure to land you in trouble. Try not to purchase stuff on an impulse and never buy something just because your friend has it to. Spending money on clothes and accessories is fine once in a while, but it has to be on priority-basis.
  • When it comes to food, most of us tend to over-estimate the amount of groceries we actually need and end up buying way more. Jot down a list of what is required and stick to the list when you go for shopping. Don’t buy anything extra because a discount is being offered!
  • Saving money by using coupons and vouchers might not seem like much, but it can actually help in the long run. Quite a few supermarkets, restaurants, movie halls, etc. run schemes where you can get hefty discounts if you carry a coupon. Vouchers can sometimes be utilized for home or car repairs, haircuts, pet care, and so on.
  • Poring over your bills and bank statements might yield some surprises. For example, you might be paying for a gym membership that you no longer have time for, but it didn’t come to notice before. Check for such hidden charges and strike them off. Bills and direct debit / standing order payments have to be 100% correct.
  • Wasting energy can eat into your savings if you are not careful. Do you tend to leave on electrical appliances when not in use? Ensure that such devices are not kept on unnecessarily, switch off lights in unoccupied areas of your home, and install energy-saving bulbs.
  • Saving fuel is yet another area where you can save some cash too. Stop using the car at every given opportunity. Try to take a bus or the subway while going to work or carpool if possible. For trips to local shops and departments stores, use a cycle or walk.

You can save quite a lot over time, if you manage to reduce expenses that are unnecessary. It might take some time to gather a substantial amount, but it is certainly worth the effort.
